AUEB’s Human Resource Management Laboratory Research: "Teleworking: Will it stay with us?"

Athens, 01/02/2022

PRESS RELEASE

AUEB’s Human Resource Management Laboratory Research: "Teleworking: Will it stay with us?"

The positive attitude of the employees and the adoption & implementation of remote working/teleworking is confirmed by research conducted by the Human Resources Management Laboratory (HRMlab), which scientifically supports the Postgraduate Program in Human Resources Management, of the Athens University of Economics & Business.

The research, under the scientific responsibility of the Director of the HRM Laboratory, Assistant Professor Eleanna Galanaki, was conducted in November 2021, on 557 employees of organizations and companies operating in Greece and repeats the corresponding research conducted in November 2020 in a similar sample for the purpose of time comparison.

  • 42% of respondents state that their working hours have increased compared to those before the outbreak of the pandemic.
  • Fewer teleworkers during the survey in 2021 compared to 2020, after the updates of the measures (before the appearance of the Omicron variant).
  • 50% of respondents now have teleworking experience, either during the pandemic or earlier. Before the pandemic, only 30% had such an experience.
  • Employers provided teleworking support tools to 63% of the respondents (higher than in 2020).
  • Of the employees who have never participated in teleworking, 20% would like to participate (higher than in 2020).
  • 85% of those who work remotely today, want to continue teleworking (very: 20%, enough: 37%, moderate: 27%).
  • 84% prefer either a regularity in remote working (once or more times per week -50.5%), or application of teleworking whenever needed/required (34%).
  • The majority recognize that teleworking facilitates them in various ways (mainly saving time and resources).
  • In general, respondents do not feel that teleworking affects their performance at work (either positively or negatively).
  • Also, they do not feel that teleworking affects their stress levels at work (either positively or negatively).
  • The most negative attitude as far as teleworking is concerned was displayed by older employees -those who "assist other people” (eg education, medicine, nursing, providing information, etc.). More positive attitude was displayed by those who mainly work "with numbers, files or machines, in a given and regular manner".
  • The predictions of most respondents regarding teleworking are that its use will expand in the future. This belief is stronger in 2021 than in 2020 to those who have teleworking experience.

As Assistant Professor Eleanna Galanaki noted, "The Human Resources Laboratory and the Postgraduate Program in Human Resource Management of the Athens University of Economics and Business consistently serve the field of Human Resource Management and contribute to the study of trends in the work environment with the ultimate goal of optimizing conditions for employees, organizations and the economy.  Significant contribution to our work is made by the participants and participants in the research, individuals and organizations that consistently trust us and respond to our invitations. We warmly thank them for their participation! We hope the research will contribute to the development of scientifically sound strategies in the field of HR. "

The overall results of the research are available on the website of the Human Resources Management Laboratory of the Athens University of Economics and Business.
