The Athens University of Economics and Business hosted the HERMES annual Conference for 2021

The Athens University of Economics and Business hosted the HERMES annual Conference for 2021

This year, the HERMES network annual Conference was organized by AUEB on October 14 and 15, 2021.

The HERMES network, founded in 1997, today consists of 26 well-known universities in 15 countries (3,589 courses, 754 teachers).

AUEB has been a member of the HERMES network since 2010, under which it has already signed - since December 2020 - the first dual degree cooperation agreement between the Department of Statistics and the University of Pavia.

The Vice Rector for International Cooperation and Growth, Professor Vasilios Papadakis, stated: “The Athens University of Economics and Business is the only Greek University that participates in the international universities network HERMES. It is a network of high-quality Universities not only from Europe but also from the United States of America and China. It is our honour to host HERMES annual conference, while expanding as much as possible the possibilities of cooperation both at the research level and at the level of exchange of students and administrative staff. An important goal for AUEB is the dual degrees development at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, such as the recent cooperation with the University of Pavia. Such, value-added collaborations, offer the possibility to our students to receive a degree both from the AUEB and a collaborating academic institution of high quality. Our strategic goal remains internationalization with a focus on quality”.

Successful implementation of the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Program (2108 Project) at the Athens University of Economics and Business

Successful implementation of the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Program (2108 Project)

at the Athens University of Economics and Business

The Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Program (2108 Project), which was funded by the European Commission through the Hellenic National Agency, was implemented successfully at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).

The Program, which had a thirty eight months duration (01/06/2018 - 31/07/2021), contributed significantly to the further development of international collaborations of our University at an academic and research level and enhanced the already existing academic bonds with Partner Universities, located in non-EU countries.

AUEB, as the Project Coordinator, signed Inter-institutional Agreements and carried out the exchange of thirteen (13) students, teaching and administrative staff members with the following non-EU Higher Education Institutions:

  1. Stetson University, School of Business Administration, Florida, USA
  2. Stevens Institute of Technology, Howe School of Technology Management, New Jersey, USA
  3. Université du Québec à Montréal - École des sciences de la Gestion, Canada
  4. Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, Moscow, Russia

More specifically, the following types of mobility took place during the Project:

a)            first and second cycle students carried out a student mobility period at a Partner Institution with full academic recognition of their learning outcomes through the implementation of the ECTS credit system

b)            teaching staff members  carried out successfully a short duration teaching mobility period abroad

c)            teaching / administrative staff members carried out a training mobility period

The impact of the above mentioned Program to students and staff was significant and led to an increase in the demand for participation from these groups. AUEB, focused on its internationalization strategy and taking into consideration the increasing interest of students and staff to participate in the Program, aims to enrich its partnerships with more non-EU Universities under the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Program, by adding new Inter-Institutional Agreements to the already existing ones.

AUEB Professors link “vanity” plates in Greece with “conspicuous corruption”

PRESS RELEASE

AUEB Professors link “vanity” plates in Greece

with “conspicuous corruption”

Statistical analysis, conducted by Associate Professor Panagiotis Louridas and Professor Diomidis Spinellis, suggests existence of an illegal market for purchasing distinctive license plates

In Greece, drivers cannot legally purchase custom vanity plates. However, a new study confirms an open secret: that the country has an illegal market for acquiring license plates with distinctive number patterns, perhaps as a form of “conspicuous corruption.” Associate Professor Panos Louridas and Professor Diomidis Spinellis, of the Department of Management Science and Technology, Athens University of Economics and Business, report their findings in the respected open-access journal PLOS ONE. Their article, entitled “Conspicuous Corruption: Evidence at a Country Level”  is available online.

Through the widespread practice of conspicuous consumption, people may purchase certain products—such as jewelry, art, or vacations—as status symbols. Previous research has also found evidence for various associations between unethical actions and higher wealth or social class.

For the new study, Mr. Louridas and Mr. Spinellis explored one intersection between conspicuous consumption and dishonest behavior. They conducted a statistical analysis of Greek license plates to test a subjective observation that distinctive license plates, such as those with repeating numbers, appeared more often on luxury cars than would be expected from the random process by which the plates should be issued.

The analysis showed that, indeed, distinctive license plates appear more often on cars from luxury brands and cars with larger engines than on other models. This finding is in line with other evidence from the Ministry of Transport in supporting the open secret that a market exists in Greece whereby drivers can engage in bribery to obtain more desirable license plates.

Mr. Louridas and Mr. Spinellis suggest that Greece’s vanity plate market represents the practice of conspicuous corruption, in which part of the value of a status symbol arises from hinting that the owner “knows the ropes” and is above the rules.

Indeed, the authors note, the cost of a distinctive plate in Greece is not prohibitively expensive, suggesting that the hint of rule-breaking has significant value as a status symbol. Further research could explore the nature of similar markets for conspicuous corruption in other countries, and which cultural characteristics are associated with the practice.
