Sir C.A.R. Hoare, FRS, Emeritus Professor of Computing at Oxford University, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by AUEB's Department of Informatics

Professor Sir Charles-Antony-Richard Hoare (Tony Hoare), Emeritus Professor of Computing at Oxford University Computing Laboratory, Oxford, England (since 2000) and Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Department of Informatics at AUEB.

Professor Hoare has been Professor of Computing Science at Queen's University of Belfast, U.K. (1968-1977) and (James Martin) Professor of Computing-Director of Programming Research Group at Oxford University (1977-2000).

In 1980 Professor Sir Charles-Antony-Richard Hoare was awarded the ACM Turing Award for his fundamental contributions to the definition and design of programming languages, in 1981 received the Harry H. Goode Memorial Award and in 2000 he was awarded the Kyoto Prize for Information Science. In 2000 he was knighted for services to education and computer science.

In 1982 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society [FRS] and on Oct 13, 2006, the Computer History Museum (CHM) in Mountain View, California inducted him as Fellow of the Museum for development of the Quicksort algorithm and for lifelong contributions to the theory of programming languages. Professor Hoare also holds an honorary Doctorate of Science by the Queen's University Belfast in Ireland.
