Mrs Christina Papagianni, postgraduate student of AUEB’s MSc in International Shipping, Finance and Management, Christina Papagianni received the first group award at the 24th Economia Student Contest, organised by the Economia Group and the Greek Economic Magazine “Economic Review” ("Οικονομική Επιθεώρηση").

“The Greek Shipping of Tomorrow” was the theme of the 24th Economia Student Contest.

The topic of the awarded essay was “Smart Shipping Culture: The rise of Big Data”.

Summary of the essay

The maritime industry sees digitalization and Big Data as a transformative force. Digitalization has the power to transform the shipping industry, from the design and construction of ships to the contracts and logistics. Other industries have been affected by the digitalization much earlier than the shipping industry, which is due to its complexity. The opportunities clearly lie in protecting the budget while increasing the efficiency. Today the main challenge lies in integrating different systems into one. Maritime players should, therefore, invest in a digital and data-driven culture in order to incorporate all the opportunities and eventually survive since smart shipping and Big Data is undeniably the future of Greek Shipping.

The Awards Ceremony took place in May 2018 at Laskarides Foundation, Piraeus, Greece.
