DMST Graduate Fotios Machairas Reaches the Summit of Europe
The 28-year-old mountaineer Fotios Machairas, a graduate of the Department of Management Science and Technology (DMST) at the Athens University of Economics and Business, participated in the 2025 Greek expedition aiming to conquer Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe.
Alongside his professional activity as an RPA and Power Platform Developer in consulting, he is an active member of both the Hellenic and International Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing. He seeks balance between professional and personal life, integrating mountaineering and climbing as an essential part of his daily routine.
The expedition lasted 10 days (July 25 – August 3, 2025) and involved demanding preparation, glacier trekking, and technical challenges, under conditions of reduced atmospheric pressure and oxygen, which cause intense physical strain despite the summer season.
The Greek team reached 5,350 meters, while the summit attempt was called off 292 meters below the peak, for safety reasons due to adverse weather conditions and following instructions from the local rescue team.
“The analytical thinking and organizational skills I gained from my studies are a key factor in my success in the mountains,” states our graduate.
