On May 30 2008 Dr Dimitris Brachos, a 2007 Doctoral graduate from AUEB’s Department of Management Science and Technology (Supervisor: Assoc. Professor K. E. Soderquist) was awarded the Emerald and EFMD "Highly Commended Award for Doctoral Research" in the area of Knowledge Management. His PhD dissertation was entitled "Knowledge Sharing within Organizational Units: The Role of Knowledge Sharing Context, Process and Knowledge Sharing Effectiveness in Unit Performance. An Empirical Study".

The award was given in person by Mr. Jordi Carlat, Country Manager Mediterranean Europe, Emerald. Each year, the British publishing company Emerald and the European Foundation for Management Development award the best PhD dissertations in various areas of management research.

Using Structural Equation Modeling and other advanced statistical analysis techniques on a sample of marketing departments from large-sized firms in Greece (many of them part of multinationals) belonging to the ICT, Pharmaceuticals and Food industries, the dissertation develops and tests a model of knowledge sharing integrating both contextual, structural and performance variables.

Key results include the significant role of context (i.e., trust, motivation, leadership, structure, social interaction) for the outcomes of knowledge sharing, and the identification of a non-linear relationship between knowledge sharing effectiveness and organizational performance.
