National Summit on the European Green Deal

AUEB, in collaboration with EIT Climate-KIC Hub Greece, the ATHENA Research Center and the UN SDSN Greece, jointly organize the National Summit on the European Green Deal.  

The opening session of the Summit will take place at Goulandris Natural History Museum (13 Levidou Str, Kifisia) on Friday, 6 March 2020, while the main part of the Summit will be held at the Main Conference Hall of Piraeus Port Authority S.A. on Monday, 9 March 2020.

This National Summit aims to gather the research and innovation ecosystem, together with the financial and policy institutions of the country in order to accelerate the much-needed sustainability transition.

According to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change latest report, we have 10 years to limit climate change catastrophe and keep global warming to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people. Becoming the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050 is the greatest challenge and opportunity of our times. To achieve this, the European Commission presented the European Green Deal, the most ambitious package of measures that should enable European citizens and businesses to benefit from sustainable green transition. Measures accompanied with an initial roadmap of key policies range from ambitiously cutting emissions, to investing in cutting-edge research and innovation, to preserving Europe’s natural environment. The Greek National Summit aims to gather the research and innovation ecosystem, together with the financial and policy institutions of the country in order to accelerate the much-needed sustainability transition.

EIT Climate-KIC is Europe’s largest public-private partnership focused on the rapid, broad-based systems innovation we now need to tackle climate change and build resilient, net zero-carbon societies. EIT Climate-KIC is a knowledge and innovation community established and funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) in 2010 aiming to tackle climate change through innovation bringing together large and small companies, scientific institutions and universities, city authorities and other public bodies, start-ups, and students.

ATHENA RC is leading EIT Climate-KIC Hub Greece aiming at a prosperous and climate-resilient society based on the circular economy model through accelerating innovation and developing synergies.

The Department of Informatics of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) co-organizes the 1^st international Athens Natural Language Processing Summer School (AthNLP), which will take place at the campus of NCSR “Demokritos” from September 18 to 25, 2019. Natural Language Processing is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence that develops algorithms and computational models that allow computers to “understand” and generate natural language text and/or spoken language. Examples of applications developed by the Natural Language Processing Group of AUEB’s Department of Informatics include information extraction from legal and biomedical documents, opinion mining from product reviews, systems that answer questions by searching for answers in scientific journals etc.

The instructors of the Summer School are distinguished Natural Language Processing researchers from universities, research centers, and information technology companies around the world. The School will be attended by approximately 100 participants, selected from approximately 260 who applied to participate. The central lectures of the Summer School will be video-recorded and will be made freely available after the completion of the School.

The Summer School is co-organized by the Department of Informatics of AUEB, the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of NCSR “Demokritos”, the Institute for Language and Speech Processing of the Research Center “Athena”, and the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences of Heriot-Watt University. The Scientific Committee of the School comprises Ion Androutsopoulos (Associate Professor, AUEB), Andreas Vlachos (Senior Lecturer, University of Cambridge), Anastasia Krithara (Associate Researcher, NCSR “Demokritos”), Yannis Konstas (Lecturer, Heriot-Watt), Haris Papageorgiou (Research Director, RC “Athena”) and Georgios Petasis (Researcher, NCSR “Demokritos”). Dr. Vlachos and Dr. Konstas are also alumni of AUEB’s Department of Informatics. The Summer School is organized in cooperation with Lisbon Machine Learning School.

The Summer School is supported by several sponsors and academic supporters, including AUEB’s Education and Lifelong Learning Center and AUEB’s MSc in Data Science.

16th Summer School on Risk Finance and Stochastics - RFS-2019

AUEB’s Departments of Statistics, Accounting and Finance, and Business Administration in collaboration with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial-Financial Mathematics of the University of the Aegean and the Hellenic Actuarial Society,  and the Research Laboratory on Stochastic Modelling and Applications are co-organizing the 16^th Summer School on Risk Finance and Stochastics, that will take place in the premises of Athens University of Economics and Business 9-13 September 2019. The focus of this year is on Actuarial Pricing and Practice and Stochastic Modelling.

The school hosts advanced courses on modern areas of Risk Management and Modelling, Financial Mathematics and Economics, Actuarial Mathematics and Economics, Stochastic Analysis and Modelling as well as for the first time hands on courses related to realistic problems and applied techniques in Actuarial Practice, delivered by academics as well as top experts in Actuarial Practice. This year’s keynote academic speakers are Professor Fausto Gozzi (Luiss Roma) and Professor K. Koufopoulos (York).

Intended audience is postgraduate students, PhD candidates and researchers as well as practitioners interested or already working with these concepts and techniques.

1st Panhellenic Negotiations Competition (Athens Negotiations Tournament)

The Athens Negotiations Tournament (ANT) is an initiative of the Department of Business Administration of AUEB, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Ilias Kapoutsis. The competition will take place in multiple locations in Athens on the 13^th and 14^th of April 2019, with the participation of up to 18 teams consisting of undergraduate and postgraduate students from Greek and Cypriot Universities and the support of 40 volunteers.

ANT is an opportunity to bring together students from various universities, enhance their negotiating skills and contribute to the extraversion of our University and to academic excellence.

Deadline of applications: 28 February 2019

To evaluate the applications, the organizing committee will take into consideration the team members’ completed studies, possible work/voluntary experience, awards and distinctions, geographical origin of the group, as well as the accompanying video explaining the team’s motive to participate in the competition.

The International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) was founded in 1992 and comprises individual and corporate members from all over the world. It is considered the largest and most prominent society of scholars with an interest in maritime economics, shipping finance and management, ports and maritime logistics, engineering and other maritime related fields.

The IAME Annual Conference is an important event. It contributes to the exchange of current research and information relevant to the maritime sector, as well as the valuable interaction between scholars and practitioners at a global scale.
