Το Οικονομικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών έχοντας ως κύριο στόχο την οργάνωση Διδακτορικών Σπουδών υψηλών προδιαγραφών, δίνει ιδιαίτερη έμφαση σε αυτές, καθώς αποτελούν δείκτη αξιολόγησης του επιπέδου της επιστημονικής ανάπτυξης τόσο του Πανεπιστημίου, όσο και ολόκληρης της χώρας.
