PhotographWelcome to my personal web pages at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). I am an assistant professor in the Department of Informatics. Before joining AUEB (in 2002), I was a researcher in the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (1998-2002), and a researcher in the Language Technology Group of the Microsoft Research Institute (now the Centre for Language Technology) of Macquarie University in Sydney (1996-97). I studied in the Department of Artificial Intelligence (now part of the School of Informatics) of the University of Edinburgh (1991-96, MSc and PhD) and in the Department of Electrical Engineering (now the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering) of the National Technical University of Athens (1986-91).

My expertise is in Artificial Intelligence, especially Natural Language Processing. My current research interests include the following topics:

  • natural language question-answering for databases, ontologies, document collections, and the Web,
  • natural language generation from databases and ontologies, especially Semantic Web ontologies,
  • text summarization, including sentence compression,
  • paraphrasing and textual entailment, and their use in question answering and text summarization,
  • document classification, including hierarchical text classification and spam filtering,
  • natural language processing tools for Greek, for example part-of-speech taggers and named-entity recognizers,
  • machine learning in natural language processing,
  • natural language processing in digital curation.

I am the head of AUEB's Natural Language Processing Group, adjunct researcher of the Digital Curation Unit of the Institute for the Management of Information Systems at the "Athena" Research Centre, and coordinator of the Hellenic Language Technology List.

Most of my publications are available on-line, some with accompanying software and datasets. My web pages also contain information on the research projects I am or was involved in, the courses that I teach or I have taught, the student projects I have supervised or I propose, and ways to contact me. You can find more information about me in my CV (in English and in Greek).
