Emm. Giakoumakis was born in Heraklion, Crete (GREECE). He is the Rector of the University (2015- ). He received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering in 1981, and his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering in 1988, both from the National Technical University of Athens.

In 1990 he joined the Athens University of Economics and Business where he currently holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Informatics. His research interests include software engineering, regulation and competition in electronic services, biomedical applications.

Beyond his teaching responsibilities, Emm. Giakoumakis has published in the area of Computer Science. Moreover, he had central involvement in the elaboration of studies pertinent to introduction of Information Technologies in major organizations of the public and / or private sector. In addition, he has contributed to the drafting of programmes related to introduction and / or promotion of Information Society in Greece. Emm. Giakoumakis has served at the following positions:

  • 2011-2015: Vice-Rector of Academic Affairs of AUEB
  • 2000-2005: Chairman of the National Telecommunications and Post Commission of Greece (E.E.T.T.), the Greek National Regulatory Authority.
  • 1998-2000: Secretary General for Communications, in the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
  • 1995-1997: Chairman and Managing Director of the "Hellenic Information Systems S.A"
  • 1987-1990: Director of Informatics Department of "Hellenic Agency for Local Development and Local Authority S.A"
