Workshop Scope

There are a number of Ph.D. consortia that have proven excellent fora for research students to discuss their work with eminent scholars.

The focus of the Supervisors Workshop is very different: it is to discuss the supervision process and the role of the supervisor. It is expected that both experienced research supervisors and less experienced academics will participate.

The day’s activities will be discussion oriented, fully participative. There will be panel sessions that look at different views on major issues. There will also be smaller discussion groups looking at particular issues for presenting to the group as a whole.

Everyone intending to attend should express one item that they feel strongly about in the form of a one-page position statement. These expressions will together be used to form the panels and discussion groups. Each discussion group will present a plenary statement based on the work of the group.

These plenary statements and panel responses will be used as the basis of chapters in a book which will aim at providing a handbook of good practice for supervisors of doctoral students in Information Systems and for doctoral students themselves. The book will be edited by ourselves, with invited chapters from authors participating in the workshop

Potential topics for discussion in panels and working groups might include (but should not be limited to) the following:

• Factory vs. apprentice models of supervision
• Regional differences
• How to advise on research methods
• Supervisor’s relationship with students
• How to combine an externally funded project with a Ph.D.
• Rules on publishing together
• Time management
• Examining process
• Useful materials

Send position statements to David Avison (avison@essec.fr) and Jan Pries-Heje (jph@itu.dk)

The cost of the workshop will be minimal – in the range of US $20-30. The cost will cover expenses for room bookings, coffee breaks, etc.
